Here you will find a detailed guide about creating a platform bed in easy steps.

STEP 1: ASSEMBLE THE DIY PLATFORM BED

Starting with my top and bottom frames, I cut all of my pieces.
1. For 1 1/2-inch thick boards, I used my Kreg Jig set to drill all the pocket holes. Click HERE to buy the Kreg Jig.
2. The top frame was attached with 2 1/2′′ pocket hole screws and wood glue.
I followed up by doing the same for the bottom frame.
3. With 2 1/2-inch wood screws and wood glue, I attached the bottom frame to the side rails after flipping the top frame over.

STEP 2: ATTACH THE SUPPORTS TO THE PLATFORM BED

After flipping it back over, I attached the center support with 2 1/2-inch pocket hole screws. Because the bed is heavy, you may need help flipping it back over. I attached the 2*3 cleats with 2 1/2′′ wood screws (I call for 2*2’s in the plans since 2*3’s aren’t available everywhere. If you use 2*2’s for the cleats, get furring strips to save money).

I prefer Spax self-tapping screws. They are available at Home Depot and can be a little pricey, but they do not require pre-drilling!  If you are using regular wood screws, be sure to pre-drill first to prevent the wood from splitting.

STEP 3: FINISHING THE BED FRAME

Rust-Oleum Dark Walnut Stain (you can find it HERE on Amazon) was applied after I sanded the whole Platform Bed. Get the Varathane brand at Home Depot in Dark Walnut (same stain).

STEP 4: THE SLABS FOR THE SUPPORT FOR THE MATTRESS ARE ATTACHED TO THE MATTRESS

Then I took the bed inside and put it in my little man’s room!  Attaching the 1*3 slats was done with my brad nailer.  I attached them evenly to both cleats and the center support by spacing them out evenly. Furring strips can be used for this part. Just make sure they are smooth so they don’t tear up your mattress. As an alternative, you can attach the slats with 1 1/4′′ wood screws.

STEP 5:The DIY Headboard is attached to the Platform Bed in Step 5

I drilled two 1/2 inch span screws into the bottom and top frames of the platform from the backside of the headboard legs to attach it to the bed.

MODIFICATION MEASUREMENTS

We always get questions on how to modify the measurements to fit other mattress dimensions. This DIY Bed Frame is easy to modify to fit any mattress size.
1. Twin Size Mattress – Subtract 15″ from the width.
2. Queen Size Mattress – Add 7″ to the width and 5″ to the length
3. King Size Mattress – Add 23″ to the width and 5″ to the length.
4. California King Size Mattress – Add 19″ to the width and 9″ to the length.
